The darkness that Dr. King refers to can symbolize many things today and the hate he mentions is as strong today as it was four decades ago only we are dealing with a different kind of hate. In todays world, darkness is apparent either corner you turn, with the daily atrocities being committed in southern Sudan and the ongoing conflict in Iraq serving as prime examples. Over 30 countries are actively engaged in civil war, and there is the constant threat of another and more deadly terrorist attack anywhere in the world. When Dr. King tell light can drive out darkness, he was referring to solving crisis in a diplomatic manner.
